If you've heard a loud bang from your garage and your door suddenly won't move — or feels impossibly heavy — there's a good chance your garage door spring has broken. It's one of the most common garage door problems we fix across Sydney, and it's also one of the most important to handle correctly.
This guide tells you exactly what to do — and what not to do — when your Garage Door Spring Broken In Sydney.
How Do You Know If Your Garage Door Spring Has Broken?
The most obvious sign is a loud bang — sometimes described as a gunshot — coming from the garage. This happens when the spring snaps suddenly under tension. After this, you'll typically notice one or more of these symptoms:
• The garage door won't open at all, or only lifts a few centimetres before stopping
• The door feels extremely heavy when you try to lift it manually
• The door opens crookedly or on one side only
• You can see a visible gap or separation in the spring coil above the door
• The motor is running but the door isn't moving
If you notice any of these signs, stop using the door immediately. Operating a garage door with a broken spring puts enormous strain on the motor and can cause the door to fall suddenly — which is a serious safety risk.

Torsion Springs vs Extension Springs — Which Do You Have?
There are two main types of garage door springs used in Sydney homes, and knowing which type you have helps explain what happened and what's involved in the repair.
Torsion Springs
Torsion springs are mounted horizontally on a metal shaft directly above the garage door opening. They work by storing energy as they twist (torque) when the door closes, then releasing that energy to assist in lifting the door when it opens. Most modern Sydney homes have torsion spring systems.
Torsion springs are rated for approximately 10,000 to 20,000 cycles — roughly 7 to 14 years with average use. When a torsion spring snaps, the door becomes very heavy and the motor can't lift it safely.
Extension Springs
Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on either side of the door. They stretch and contract as the door moves, providing the counterbalancing force needed to open and close the door. Extension springs are more common on older or lighter garage doors.
Extension springs should always have a safety cable running through the centre. Without it, a snapped extension spring can fly across the garage at high speed, causing serious injury or damage.
Why Did My Garage Door Spring Break?
Garage door springs don't last forever — they have a finite lifespan measured in cycles (one cycle = one open and one close). The most common reasons springs break include:
• Normal wear and tear — the spring simply reached the end of its rated cycle life
• Rust and corrosion — particularly common in Sydney's coastal suburbs where salt air accelerates metal deterioration
• Poor quality springs — cheaper springs installed during original construction or a previous repair
• Lack of maintenance — springs that haven't been lubricated regularly wear out faster
• Cold weather — metal contracts in cold temperatures, increasing stress on the spring coils
What NOT to Do When Your Garage Door Spring Broken In Sydney
This is just as important as knowing what to do. When a garage door spring breaks:
• Don't try to force the door open — the door can fall suddenly and cause serious injury
• Don't continue using the motor — running the motor against a broken spring can burn it out and turn one repair into two
• Don't attempt to replace the spring yourself — garage door springs are under extreme tension and DIY spring replacement is one of the most dangerous home repair tasks. Serious injuries occur every year from amateur spring replacements
• Don't leave the door stuck open — this is a security risk that leaves your home exposed
How to Open Your Garage Manually While You Wait for a Technician
If your car is inside and you need to get it out before a technician arrives, follow these steps carefully:
• Locate the manual release cord — it's usually a red handle hanging from the motor rail along the ceiling of the garage
• Pull the cord down firmly to disengage the motor from the door
• With another person helping, carefully lift the door manually — it will be very heavy without the spring
• Prop the door open securely — never go under a door held up only by a broken spring
If the door is too heavy to lift safely with two people, do not force it. Call a technician and wait.
Garage Door Spring Repair in Sydney — What to Expect
A professional spring replacement by BounceBack GD typically takes 1 to 2 hours and includes:
• Full inspection of both springs — we always inspect both springs even if only one has broken, because if one spring has reached the end of its life, the other is usually not far behind
• Removal of the broken spring and installation of a new matched spring (or pair)
• Cable inspection — we check both cables for fraying or damage while we have the door down
• Drum and hardware check — we inspect the winding drums and spring anchor for wear
• Balance test — we check that the door is properly balanced before reconnecting the motor
• Motor reconnection and full function test
We carry replacement springs for all common door types and sizes in our van, which means we can complete most spring repairs in a single visit without needing to order parts.
How Long Will My New Spring Last?
Standard replacement springs are typically rated for 10,000 cycles. If your door operates 4 times per day, that's approximately 7 years of use. We also offer high-cycle springs rated for 20,000+ cycles — ideal for busy households with multiple cars or frequent access. Ask our technician about upgrade options when they're on site.
